Mondelez Ramps Up Regenerative Agriculture with 2023 ESG Report Milestones

Mondelez International has expanded its commitment to sustainable farming with measurable progress in regenerative agriculture, highlighted in its 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report. The confectionery giant reported that 63% of its global chocolate volume is now sourced through its Cocoa Life program—up from 52% in 2022. The company aims to reach 100% by 2025.

This advancement reflects Mondelez’s wider regenerative agriculture strategy, which focuses on improving soil health, conserving water, increasing biodiversity, and economically empowering farming communities. To scale its impact, the company is transitioning from pilot projects to a landscape-level approach, using region-specific diagnostics and training programs.

“We’re investing in long-term partnerships and regionally tailored programs that advance resilient ingredient sourcing,” said Christine Montenegro McGrath, Chief Impact and Sustainability Officer, Mondelez International.

One of the key highlights includes Mondelez piloting regenerative agriculture initiatives in wheat, dairy, and palm oil supply chains. These pilots serve to inform more expansive agricultural strategies across the company’s global footprint. In wheat sourcing, for example, Mondelez is collaborating with farmers in key regions like the United States and Europe to lower emissions and promote soil health.

Across all sustainability fronts, the company reports strong progress. Mondelez is on track to meet its science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030. It has also increased the percentage of recyclable packaging to 95.9%, with nearly 83% of the company’s packaging already designed for recycling. The company is targeting 100% recyclable packaging by 2025.

The ESG report also details improvements in water management and human rights due diligence in the supply chain. In 2023, Mondelez achieved its best year yet in responsible sourcing progress, having assessed nearly 100% of its palm oil supply against its sustainable sourcing policy.

For FMCG stakeholders, Mondelez’s regenerative strategy signals a shift toward embedding sustainability deeper into core supply chains—an approach likely to influence procurement and partnership models across the sector. As consumer and regulatory pressure mounts for transparent, sustainable sourcing, efforts such as Mondelez’s offer a benchmark for industry peers aiming to align environmental stewardship with commercial growth.
