Frito-Lay Recalls Select Tostitos Due to Undeclared Milk Allergen
Frito-Lay has issued a voluntary recall of a limited number of Tostitos products due to undeclared milk ingredients, potentially posing a risk to consumers with dairy allergies or sensitivities. The recall has been initiated for select 14-ounce bags of Tostitos Avocado Salsa Flavored Tortilla Chips, which may contain milk despite the allergen not being listed on the label.
The bags in question were mistakenly filled with a different chip variety that contains dairy, resulting in a mislabeling issue. No other Tostitos varieties or Frito-Lay products have been impacted by the recall.
The affected products can be identified by their UPC (028400447534) and use-by date of November 16, 2024, printed on the front of the bag. These items were distributed to retail stores nationwide, though Frito-Lay emphasized that fewer than 4,000 bags are impacted by the issue.
While no illnesses associated with the mislabeling have been reported as of yet, the recall underscores the critical importance of allergen transparency and rigorous product quality control in the FMCG sector—especially in the snacks category, where flavor variants and ingredient complexity have grown substantially.
The recall is particularly relevant for supply chain and quality assurance teams, reinforcing the need for stringent packaging validation procedures, especially in high-speed manufacturing environments. With heightened consumer awareness around allergen labeling, brand trust and compliance with FDA regulations are increasingly under scrutiny.
Consumers who have purchased the affected product are advised not to consume it and to either dispose of the chips or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Frito-Lay has made customer service channels available for additional support.
This incident marks another example of how inadvertent allergen cross-contact or mispackaging can lead to operational risks for even the most established FMCG brands. It also serves as a reminder that robust internal auditing and real-time product tracking systems remain essential to maintain both consumer safety and brand equity.
