Earth Fare Steps Up Sustainability Commitment Across its Operations

Organic supermarket chain Earth Fare is quietly reinforcing its sustainability credentials with a wide-ranging set of initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and aligning with consumer demand for greener retail practices.

Since its 2020 relaunch under new ownership, the Asheville, N.C.-based grocer has introduced a multipronged strategy that includes landfill diversion, food rescue partnerships, plastic reduction, and decarbonization. These efforts are being rolled out store by store, signaling a deliberate focus on creating measurable outcomes over marketing splash.

Landfill Diversion and Food Rescue

In partnership with local composting firm Crown Town Compost, Earth Fare’s SouthPark location in Charlotte is diverting as much as two tons of food scraps per week from landfill toward compost. Operational staff collect unsellable produce and food waste from the deli, which is then trucked to a nearby farm to enrich soil. Expansion of similar composting programs is underway across multiple Earth Fare locations.

The grocer has also strengthened its food donation program, redirecting unsold but edible products to food banks and community organizations. This dual-pronged approach not only reduces waste but enhances Earth Fare’s role as a responsible community partner—a growing expectation among modern consumers.

Reducing Plastic and Carbon Footprint

Plastic reduction is another priority. The retailer is working to replace or eliminate plastic packaging across several product lines. In fresh departments like produce, efforts are underway to shift to compostable or recyclable alternatives where feasible. Bulk bins for nuts, grains, and dried fruit further support a lower-waste model.

On the energy side, Earth Fare has implemented decarbonization initiatives such as LED lighting retrofits and energy-efficient refrigeration systems aimed at reducing operational greenhouse gas emissions. These infrastructure upgrades support cost efficiencies while boosting sustainability metrics.

Holistic Sustainability Within Reach

What sets Earth Fare’s approach apart is its focus on operational integration rather than greenwashing. Each initiative is designed to be replicable, allowing broader rollout across its 20+ stores in the Southeast. The company’s strategy reflects increasing consumer preference for retailers with authentic sustainability practices and offers a roadmap for other mid-sized chains looking to embed ESG principles without overwhelming their operations.
