Mondelez Reports Strong Progress Across Sustainability Pillars, Cocoa Sourcing in Focus

Mondelez International has made notable strides in advancing its core sustainability objectives, with its latest 2023 Snacking Made Right report revealing solid performance across key environmental and social responsibility targets, including sustainable cocoa sourcing and emission reductions.

According to the report, nearly 91% of the cocoa used by Mondelez in 2023 was sourced through its Cocoa Life program—an uptick from 80% in 2022. Cocoa Life, established in 2012, supports sustainable farming practices and aims to reach 100% cocoa sourcing coverage by 2025. This progress underscores the company’s commitment to ethical supply chain practices within the chocolate segment.

Income diversification at the farm level also remains a focus. Through Cocoa Life, over 300,000 farmers across regions such as Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, and the Dominican Republic now receive support not just in sustainable agriculture, but also in financial literacy and community engagement. This contributes directly to improved livelihoods and enhances long-term supply chain resilience.

In parallel with its cocoa commitments, Mondelez reported a 25% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2018 baseline, reinforcing its decarbonization strategy across operations. Additionally, 97% of its packaging in 2023 was designed for recyclability, with 85% of materials sourced from recycled or renewable content. Both metrics align with the company’s 2025 goals of 100% recyclable packaging and a dramatic cut in virgin plastic use.

From a portfolio perspective, the company continues to evolve its product lineup with a focus on well-being and mindful snacking. Around 18% of revenue in 2023 came from offerings designed with portion control in mind, supporting a consumer shift toward healthier lifestyles.

“We are proud of our measurable progress in creating a sustainable snacking company,” said Dirk Van de Put, Chairman and CEO. “It reflects the hard work of our teams and partners around the world as we scale impact and deliver positive outcomes across our value chain.”

With growing regulatory and consumer pressure on ESG performance, these metrics position Mondelez as a sustainability leader in the FMCG sector, particularly within confectionery and snacks. Continued improvements in ethical sourcing, emissions control, and recyclable packaging will remain
