Mondelez Commits CHF 65 Million to Expand Toblerone Production in Switzerland

Mondelez International has announced a CHF 65 million investment to significantly expand its Toblerone manufacturing facility in Bern, Switzerland, reaffirming its commitment to the iconic brand’s heritage and production base. The move is aimed at increasing capacity, enhancing operational efficiency, and supporting growing global demand for the premium chocolate brand.

The expansion at the Bern-Brünnen site, the birthplace and historical home of Toblerone since 1908, will include the addition of a state-of-the-art production line. This facility upgrade is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025. The investment underscores Mondelez’s strategy to grow its Chocolate and Snack bar categories while ensuring long-term sustainability and local job creation.

“Bern is the heart of Toblerone, and this investment supports our commitment to the city, Swiss chocolate-making expertise, and the premium positioning of the brand,” said Mert Inan, Managing Director of Mondelez Switzerland. He highlighted that the investment would not only improve production volume but also reduce the site’s environmental impact—a nod to the company’s broader sustainability goals.

The project will create around 80 new roles in the coming years, further boosting the region’s economy and strengthening Mondelez’s footprint in Switzerland. Current staff at the Bern facility are expected to benefit from upskilling opportunities as new machinery and processes are implemented.

Mondelez has been increasing its investments in core categories and brands, aligning with ongoing shifts in consumer preference for premium chocolate offerings. Toblerone continues to play a central role in this growth strategy, particularly in travel retail and key global markets where the brand enjoys strong recognition.

This announcement also comes amid the backdrop of tightened regulations around “Swissness” in product labeling. Mondelez reaffirmed that Toblerone produced in Bern will continue to carry the “Swiss Made” label, leveraging its authentic origin as a point of differentiation in a competitive confectionery landscape.

For FMCG stakeholders, this investment signals ongoing confidence in heritage brands as growth engines—especially within the premium confectionery segment. As competition intensifies and consumers increasingly seek provenance and quality, Mondelez’s move reinforces the value of strategic production localization and brand storytelling rooted in authenticity.
