Ferrero Rocher Taps Oregon Hazelnut Growers to Strengthen U.S. Supply Chain
Ferrero Rocher, the globally recognized premium chocolate brand, is increasingly sourcing hazelnuts from Oregon growers, reinforcing the state’s role as a vital supply partner in the company’s global production network. The move reflects a strategic shift toward localized sourcing for greater supply chain resilience and supports Oregon’s expanding hazelnut industry.
Long reliant on Turkish hazelnuts—the country produces approximately 70% of the world’s supply—Ferrero began actively investing in U.S. production in recent years, recognizing the quality and potential of Oregon-grown hazelnuts. Oregon is the sole commercial hazelnut producer in the U.S., contributing less than 5% to global supply but offering consistent quality and proximity to key North American markets.
Oregon growers shipped about 15,000 tons of hazelnuts to Ferrero last year alone. That figure is expected to rise steadily, with industry stakeholders anticipating that 30% of the state’s hazelnut output may eventually go to Ferrero. As U.S. demand for premium confections continues to grow, Oregon’s production is keeping pace—the state’s hazelnut acreage has multiplied fivefold over the past decade, with young orchards forecast to significantly boost output in the coming years.
Supply chain diversification is a key motivation for Ferrero’s increased engagement with U.S. growers. Weather disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties have impacted traditional sourcing routes, pushing multinational brands to explore more localized, stable alternatives. Ferrero’s collaboration with Oregon growers not only mitigates risk but also aligns with broader industry trends emphasizing traceability, sustainability, and regional sourcing.
The partnership is also prompting technique and quality alignment. Ferrero representatives are working closely with Oregon producers to ensure hazelnuts meet stringent quality criteria necessary for inclusion in signature products like Ferrero Rocher and Nutella. This knowledge exchange is bolstering local practices and helping Oregon growers meet global standards.
As new orchards reach production maturity, Oregon’s share in the global hazelnut market is poised to expand. For FMCG brands focused on secure, high-quality ingredient sourcing in North America, the Oregon-Ferrero model may serve as a blueprint for effective regional supply partnerships in the confections category and beyond.
